
He has been a newspaperman more than half a century, spending most of those years at Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Record first went to work for the newspaper in 1944 as a copy boy. He retired as ombudsman for the newspaper on Dec. 31, 1997. He continues as an occasional columnist.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1950, he served in the U.S. Army for two years and worked as a reporter at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for two years before returning to the Star-Telegram in 1954. He has held many positions at the Star-Telegram, from reporter to associate executive editor.
Record is former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation's largest journalism organization, and is the recipient of the Wells Key, the highest honor bestowed by the Society on a member. He was the chairman of the Society's fund raising group, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, from 1995 to 2001. He also served as the international president of the Organization of News Ombudsman.
He is former vice president of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and a former chair of the Mass Communications Advisory Committee at Texas Tech University. He is a member of the Texas Tech Mass Communications Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was named to the newly formed Texas Tech Mass Communication Board of Directors.
Record also served on the American Bar Association’s national Commission on Public Understand About the Law and the Commission on Partnership Programs. He is the recipient of the Ethics Award bestowed by the TCU Journalism Department and 19 professional awards for reporting, photography and headline writing. In 2003, Record was named to the Board of Visitors of the TCU AddRan College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
He has been associated with numerous civic and cultural activities in Fort Worth and is a commissioned lay minister in the Catholic Church. He directs several lay ministries at his church, St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Fort Worth. He also serves on several boards and commissions of the Diocese of Fort Worth, including being chair of the diocesan Board of Conciliation and Arbitration. Record has been listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
